Why a small mortar
A small mortar is quicker to clean and easier to store, and it suits everyday jobs such as crushing a few cloves of garlic, a teaspoon of cumin or a pinch of saffron.
Why grind your own spices
Freshly ground spices have far more aroma and flavour than ready-ground ones, which lose their oils over time. Lightly toast whole spices in a dry pan, let them cool, then grind just what you need. A tool like the small marble pestle and mortar makes this quick.
How to use it
Put a small amount in the mortar at a time, hold the mortar steady with one hand, and press and twist with the pestle rather than pounding hard. Add a pinch of salt when crushing garlic or herbs to help them break down. Used like this, the small marble pestle and mortar gives a fine, even grind.
What to grind
Use it for cumin, coriander, cardamom, peppercorns and cloves, for garlic, ginger and chillies, for herb pastes and pesto, and for nuts and seeds. A tool like the small marble pestle and mortar handles both dry and wet mixtures.
Who it is for
A tool like the small marble pestle and mortar suits home cooks who love curry, keen bakers, and anyone who enjoys making their own spice blends, rubs and pastes. It also makes a thoughtful gift for a new kitchen.
Care
Rinse the mortar and pestle straight after use, especially after garlic and chilli, and dry them fully before putting them away. Keep one for sweet spices and another for savoury if you like to avoid mixing flavours. Cared for like this, the small marble pestle and mortar will last for years.
A traditional tool
The mortar and pestle is one of the oldest kitchen tools, used across the world for thousands of years, and it is still the best way to release the full flavour of whole spices. A tool like the small marble pestle and mortar brings that tradition to your kitchen.
Making spice blends
Try your own garam masala, curry powder or dukkah: toast the whole spices, grind them together and store the blend in a small airtight jar away from light. A tool like the small marble pestle and mortar makes small, fresh batches easy.
On display
A mortar and pestle looks good on the worktop next to the hob, where it is always ready to use. Kept within reach, the small marble pestle and mortar will be used far more often.
Easy to store
The compact size fits on a narrow shelf or by the hob without taking up much room, so it is always within reach when a recipe calls for freshly ground spices.
